Made with sweet, juicy watermelon and creamy vanilla yogurt, this Watermelon Homemade Frozen Yogurt is the perfect healthy(ish!) dessert.
One of my favorite chores is going to the grocery store. It may be the old soul in me, but walking down the aisles armed with a grocery list and shopping cart is my idea of an adventure. My mind is filled with the recipes I plan to tackle that week, and I can already smell the delicious meals that will fill my kitchen. Ahhh, I love it!
When I went grocery shopping this week, the huge crates of watermelons caught my eye. I knew that watermelon season was coming to an end, and I had not enjoyed one of my favorite fruits enough for my liking. I soon found a watermelon with a large yellow spot on its underbelly, which I hoped boded well for crisp, juicy fruit inside.
As soon as I got home, I sliced the watermelon and took a bite. It was absolutely perfect, and I could not get enough. Because it was a large fruit, I knew it would be difficult for Jay and I to finish it while it was in its prime. So I froze some watermelon with the intent of transforming it into homemade fro yo. And what a wonderful decision that was!
This homemade frozen yogurt recipe is incredibly easy. Just cube fresh watermelon, freeze it, blend it with yogurt and other ingredients, and freeze it again! Start it the night before, and you can have delicious and healthy frozen yogurt for breakfast.
Yes, I am advocating for eating dessert for breakfast! We’re adults now, and life is too short for arbitrary rules (I’m only slightly joking). So pick out a watermelon and make this easy frozen yogurt recipe. I promise you it is a great, practically guilt-free treat.
how to make homemade frozen yogurt
This creamy watermelon frozen yogurt (adapted from this recipe) is incredibly easy to make!
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Fresh Fruit – Seasonal fruit is best for frozen yogurt, as it is at its most delicious peak. I used watermelon as its season is coming to a close, and you can really taste the fruit in this homemade fro yo.
- Yogurt – Of course, frozen yogurt requires yogurt. I prefer whole fat, vanilla yogurt, but the possibilities are endless. Feel free to use low-fat, plain, greek, or dairy-free yogurt instead.
- Heavy cream – The cream is optional, especially if you want a dairy-free or healthier treat. I like the richness it adds. to the frozen yogurt.
- Sugar – Granulated white sugar is another optional ingredient, but it is great if you want a slightly sweeter fro yo.
- Lemon juice – A touch of acid works to balance out the sweet, rich ingredients.
- Vanilla extract– A hint of vanilla really takes homemade frozen yogurt to the next level!
Feel free to make this recipe your own! You can really play with the ingredients to make the frozen yogurt suit your tastes and dietary needs.
